Food Fight!

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins:

“As of just a couple days ago, we now have moved 4.3 million Americans off of the food stamp program. A lot of that is fraud. A lot of it is people taking the program that shouldn’t have been. And a lot of it is just a better economy. We’ve had wage growth that has outpaced inflation for the first time since early 2021. This is a really big day. So people don’t need food stamps.”

This is an inherently untrue statement as any that has come out of this Trump regime.  Mr. Trump had fronted a similar sham at his State of the Union address on February 24, 2026 when he said “We have lifted 2.4 million Americans - a record - off of food stamps.”

While it is true they may have “lifted” people off of food stamps (SNAP), Trump was posturing the same false positive reasoning for it as his Agriculture Secretary. People were taken off the program because the program became exponentially more difficult to access, not because they got jobs, better pay, or the economy has improved. In actuality, the job market has worsened incredibly as our economy has tanked, due almost entirely to Trump’s unconstitutional and illegal war he started in Iran and the subsequent closing of the Strait of Hormuz.  Couple this with his self destructive tariffs and his blatant mishandling of relationships with our allies; our economy continues to decline more with each passing day and inflation rose to its highest level in three years, to 3.8%.

Some of this could have been mitigated by Congress and the SCOTUS, if they were more concerned with upholding the establishment of the United States and the Constitution, versus capitulating to the Trump right wing revenge ideology.

The food stamp program (SNAP) became tougher to access with the passing of PL119-21 (Public Law 119 - 21) aka, The One Big Beautiful Bill.

“The bill is projected to cut $186 billion in federal spending - 20% - from SNAP over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.”

“What we’ve seen in terms of the data is that the trend in participation declines seems to be related to the program being harder to access,” said Roger Figueroa, an assistant professor at Cornell University who studies food insecurity from a public health persepective.”

Also, the fraud the Ag Secretary speaks of is almost non-existent.  SNAP had 42,176,946 participants last year and 41,476 people were removed from the program for fraud. This is less than 1%.

Bottom line:

Republicans continue to fanfare the easily disproven achievements they claim of posterity and fiscal responsibility. All of it, to cover up their economic ineptitude and distinct malice toward the citizens of this country. They keep telling us what a great job they’re doing by getting people off SNAP and saving us money, while forcing poor people off food benefits who actually need those benefits to survive. Done entirely to give the largest tax cuts in history to the mega-wealthy.

This is a major reason why I’m pushing to throw out PL119-21 and write an entirely new budget.  The One Big Beautiful Bill does more damage to the country and our citizens than most people can even begin to comprehend, ranging from throwing struggling families off SNAP to pricing healthcare out of reach and cutting funding for environmental protections that will negatively affect our country FOR GENERATIONS.

It starts by voting rubber stampers like Tony Wied out and voting people FOR THE PEOPLE like me in.
